Our website was created to provide school students with Volunteer opportunities. Created by high schoolers, Friends Volunteering is a hub for knowledge, work, and lifelong engagement.

To be a volunteer is to embrace the profound act of giving—of time, energy, and compassion—without expectation of return. It is an acknowledgment that societal progress hinges on collective effort, transcending the barriers of race, gender, class, and privilege. Volunteering is not free from bias; access to opportunities and recognition is often influenced by systemic inequalities. Yet, it is a powerful equalizer, offering a platform for individuals to connect through shared humanity, challenge prejudices, and uplift marginalized voices. True volunteering is both an act of service and of advocacy—a commitment to nurturing a world where equity and kindness thrive.

Growing up in New York City, we have been exposed first-hand to the challenges faced by individuals facing homelessness within our community. Noticing this, we recognized that something needed to change, and we decided to be a part of the solution. As we entered high school, the curriculum started to require community service hours. However, we found that there were limited opportunities to volunteer for homeless shelters within our area. Finding resources and easily accessible opportunities was a struggle, both online and in person.

Noticing this gap, we decided to bridge it with Friends Volunteering. A platform that not only provides students with volunteering opportunities but also facilitates connections with homeless shelters and other organizations aimed at tackling homelessness.

Through this website, we hope to empower students across Brooklyn and beyond to make a difference in their communities, while gaining the service hours required for their curriculum.
